Sixty of the most talented 16-18 year olds in Northern Ireland will come together to stage one of the Grand Opera House’s most ambitious youth productions to date, Cameron Mackintosh’s stunning Miss Saigon® School Edition.

A tragedy of passion and beauty, Miss Saigon is one of the most stunning theatrical spectacles of all time. Nominated for an incredible number of Olivier, Tony and Drama Desk Awards, it has now been adapted for young people in Miss Saigon® School Edition.

Set in the turmoil of the Vietnam War, Chris, an American soldier, and Kim, a Vietnamese girl, fall in love and marry, but are distressingly separated when Chris leaves Vietnam in a hurry as Saigon falls. Left behind, Kim waits faithfully for his return, but when circumstances bring Chris back to Vietnam many years later, they are reunited, with devastating consequences.

Miss Saigon® School Edition is an epic, daring musical that is universal in its emotional power. Its impressive score includes The Movie in My Mind, Last Night of the World and American Dream.

The Grand Opera House Summer Youth Project returns in July 2019 for its ninth year with not just one but two unmissable productions – Miss Saigon® School Edition (for 16-18 year olds) and Bugsy Malone (for 10-18 year olds).

Based on the 1976 film Bugsy Malone this gangster, comedy musical, tells the story of two gangs who are in a rivalry of Capone-ian standards.

Dandy Dan’s gang has gotten the upper hand since acquiring the ‘splurge’ gun and Bugsy Malone, a one-time boxer, is thrust into the limelight when he becomes the last chance Fat Sam’s gang has of surviving. All Bugsy really wants to do is spend time with his new love, Blousey, and help her become a star, but that just isn’t on the cards for our hero.

In a final, splurge gun and custard pie showdown, one hundred of Northern Ireland’s most talented young people will ensure that this production is a sure-fire family treat! There’s room for everybody to come join the fun at Fat Sam’s Grand Slam!

“Many can dismiss youth theatre and make statements claiming “they could think of nothing worse”. Well more fool them because the cast of this show are simply outstanding. More than 200 young people took to the stage for the first time last night with such a professional air you would think they had been doing this for years.” Belfast Live (The Wizard of Oz, 2018)
